Artwork 06: Class Tee 412'12

So this year, for my class tee, I really wanted to design something that the class would be able to appreciate much more than last year's design, and I also wanted to motivate my classmates more, so I decided to add a few motivational messages! But I did try to make improvements to my design this year based on last year's response, and one of them was to include everyone's names on the back of the tee. I came up with three draft designs, and my main idea behind them was that they would make use of the idea of positive and negative space, and it would like a stamp on the tee, so it would be a simpler one compared to last year.
This is my first design, and i didn't really think it would be very popular with my classmates but I just did it anyway...
The purpose of the face behind would kind of be like a Mulan motif, and making use of the idea of heroism, (female) strength and courage to encourage my classmates. The reason why I had this phrase "we don't give up easy; we will, we will, breakthrough", was because from last year, it seemed as if a few teachers had given up on us because my class was rather different from the other classes in the sense that my class was more relaxed and we didn't seem to work as hard. I think somewhere in the back of the minds of some, we were considered as "failures", also because we were notorious for our ridiculously high Mean Subject Grade for Chemistry at 6++. This is year, however, I choose to believe for change in my class, and I know that we will breakthrough.
But yes, anyway my class didn't really fancy this design as much as the others. My second design was simple:
Above was the original, but upon request by my classmates, I added in the names at the back and this was surprisingly quite popular.

My third design is as follows:
It was my personal favourite design as I liked the scratched quality of the design and it made it more interesting and more textured. However, my class was torn between the second and third designs and to appease both sides, I decided to take suggestions for the changes I should make that the whole class would be able to come to consensus. My classmates then suggested female silhouettes, and I was rather stumped as the only female silhouettes that I saw when I searched on Google were highly inappropriate, and I decided to go with a fashion theme. The silhouettes would then be of a model walking the runway, and I felt that it would give a pinch of an attitude to the design, and it also suited the unique and differing style of my class compared to other classes.
The design was as follows:

The photos I used in the design were from somewhere on the Internet but I lost the links to it... will update this ASAP!

  2. Woah really amazing designs!! :) I personally favored the first one, the rationale behind the words is really encouraging and positive. Honestly I wouldn't give up on the break through idea, your class very picky eh? :P This is just my opinion, I feel that you could manipulate the heroism idea into the composition that your class favors (eg. one motif in front and names + something else at the back; both upper middle)

Besides, the swirly font and the lip texture in your second design are also effective in bringing out the notion of feminism. Sometimes I do feel that it's an honor to design something for your class, but at the same time it annoys me when the class just don't seem to understand my taste/choice of art and expects me to alter my design just to please them. =_= Well, perhaps it's my own problem not sure if you feel the same way too.

Overall, I think you are effective and successful in manipulating the silhouette idea! An area for improvement will be to use an original image/ logo/ motif for your design (if you have time haha). This will certainly add originality and gives no reason for your class to complain >DD

Btw is that Mulan your face?

  3. I think that your designs are really interesting and sleek in a way. I love how you are able to create monochromatic graphic designs, manipulating the positive and negative spaces. There seems to be like a pop-art reference to Andy Warhol in your last 2 front tee designs, which I think are absolutely incredible.
If I'm not wrong, the second design is a picture of you? I think that it is interesting that you can use yourself as a reference to your designs. This makes your design uniquely you, it's like a self-portrait in some sense.
My favorite design would be the 3rd one as I loved how the dress (although created from lines) has a certain fluidity to it while the model walks. The fact that the model faces the front makes the shirt looks as thought she is going to walk to of the shirt. Hence, there is like an x-factor and a surrealistic aspect to the design as well.
Some areaa for improvement would be for the back of the shirt, you can actually cut down on the amount of works because I feel that the words can be rather distracting, and takes the viewer's attention on the graphics off. The simplicity in the front design is also somewhat not being complemented by the back design. A suggestion would be to use the back sillhouette of the model as the print for the back of the shirt. Then, both the front and back are able to complement each other. To include your class and all those details, perhaps you can try to do some kind of typography effect around the silhouette, keeping it minimal as much as possible. An alternative would also be to include these information on the sleeves. I don't know, but I personally feel that your designs would be even better if you minimised the use of words on the design. My favourite class shirt across the level!
