Final Piece Part 2: Sewing and Troubles

Okay should have blogged the remaining parts of Coursework a long long long time ago but now that I have time I can finally do it more leisurely :) But yes brand new day and it was time to be up and early for the long day of sewing ahead. And also even as I put this process of doing the final piece into parts, trust me, it's not as simple as it looks. It's intensive and tiring work not just for the eyes, and patience is definitely key for a quality piece of work.

So here goes.

Basically there was more cutting,ironing and sewing and it repeats, and not to mention, intensive pinning too.

The usually most annoying part which is threading the eye of the needle , especially when it kept falling out due to my carelessness.

And when I failed to get a good stitch, I decided to just be patient to create the quality I wanted. Later I discovered I kept getting bad stitches because the needle was spoilt.

 After removing the stitches...

More sewing...

And finally, the first outfit was coming together!

Back to Basics

So after a failed experiment with pointillism using pen and watercolour, I just decided to abandon the technique for the moment and decided to just go back to the basics of colour pencils, using lines to create the portrait, but sadly had to use a reference.

Then again, it's Shu Pei, a pretty good Chinese model anyways.

Face Shots

Face shots are a lot harder to capture than you think. Out of the like 1939384852734 number of pictures I captured, only 1 I felt was truly worthy of displaying here :/ It's not even the skill of zipai, but rather it is one of those cases where you really feel the importance of a photographer or an eye to see what is happening on the screen to capture the right picture at the perfect angle.

Rich Begany Still Life Photography

All images are taken off from Rich Begany's (http://richbeganyphoto.com/) Website, I do not own them.

He has a way of recreating the way people see the products, making the unobserved observed. The images he captures are creative and dynamic, and are truly a piece of artwork, beyond just selling the product. 

Rich Begany's third portfolio (http://richbeganyphoto.com/Portfolio3.html) has food shots which I find are really interesting and worth a look as well.

Love playing with cloth and it's effects in photography.

Unexpected Part 02

Over here I'll be addressing the unexpected artworks I developed from my seemingly failed fashion photoshoot. It became more about the concept this time round.

My second series: Alone with One's Phantoms, Jubilee Tai, Photography 2012

I like the paradoxical title :)

The blue reflected reminds one of a sea and an ethereal place. The existent body interacts with the seemingly non-existent body (reflection). There is connection, even within and with oneself. Even amidst the coolness and relaxed (sometimes even still) feel of the series, the physical connection of body and reflection bring an imagined spark and life, as if crossing the boundaries between physical and imagined realm. 

The reflection takes on the original role of the body and the body takes on the role of reflection; a switching of realms.

I love these images, contemplative and surreal. (BTW GUYS ZERO PHOTOSHOP, only used iphoto for colour editing)

Unexpected beauty.

Oh yes but one more thing, I was thinking kinda like about how one of these images would do as a book cover :/ thinking haha sounds cool

Ignore the weird hair haha but i was thinking along the lines of twin sisters who were separated at birth but somehow one of them finds out about a pledge made by their parents with someone concerning the separation of the twins. The pledge eventually brings them together. Would be kinda cool i think :D

Unexpected Part 01

So today I started out with hoping to do a modelled fashion shoot and everything but self-timing every shot was just tedious and gradually I started to think it was a definite failed shoot, but I persisted in making more shots, and unexpectedly I came up with two photography series, and also some experimental artistic shots.

The first series: All in the Snap of a Finger, Jubilee Tai, Photography 2012

All in the Snap of a Finger I: Leap of Faith 

All in the Snap of a Finger II: Fall from Grace

I really like the way the figure has been captured in a whir, visible, yet not visible, opening up the photograph to interpretation. 

Also, the title of the series - All in the Snap of a Finger - highlights the way human decisions can change things drastically. For shot I, it shows how a leap of faith can sometimes be spur of the moment, where one throws off all hesitance and worries. It is quick and unpredictable, just like in the snap of a finger. For shot II, even a fall from grace is easily possible at any juncture. Quick and unpredictable, just like in the snap of a finger.
